At Allied Physical Medicine, our goal is always to provide our patients with the most advanced care possible. We focus on holistic methods to pain relief and natural healing. When you visit your chiropractor in our Lancaster office, we'll always offer the most effective treatment for your situation. For some, that may be the use of cold laser therapy.
What Is Cold Laser Therapy?
Cold laser therapy, sometimes called Low-Level Laser Therapy (or LLLT) is a type of treatment administered to a specific area causing pain. This method uses wavelengths of light (lasers) that enter into the tissues of the body. When applied in the right manner and at the right level, this method can work to stimulate and accelerate the body's natural healing process. When you come in for this type of treatment, you will not feel pain or even discomfort. Our team has seen significant success with the use of this therapy alongside other treatment plans.
When Can Cold Laser Therapy Work?
We recommend the use of cold laser therapy when the pain or injury can be pinpointed to a specific area. This method works for both chronic and acute conditions. It can help with muscle and joint pain in nearly any area of the body. We may recommend it if you are suffering from:
- Muscle spasms
- Limited mobility or function of an area
How Does Cold Laser Therapy Work?
When you come in for this type of treatment, we'll use a handheld device that emits the cold laser. These are small devices. We'll position the laser over the area that is causing pain. It only stays there for a few minutes, depending on the type of treatment we are administering and the specific type of injury present. Once in place, the device will emit non-thermal photons of light. This light moves into the tissues of the skin, deeply until it reaches the tissues or fat tissues under the outer layers. Most often, the device can reach up to five centimeters in depth.
There, it triggers a reaction within the cells. The cells activate and are stimulated by the laser. The process works much like photosynthesis works in plants. The light is absorbed and then interacts within the cells to create energy. It works to encourage the body to begin healing the impacted area. By stimulating the body's natural ability to heal, it is possible to see your body heal faster.
We often use cold laser therapy alongside other treatments that may be right for you. This includes chiropractic care, massage therapy, and corrective exercises. We may also encourage you through lifestyle and nutritional advice.
